This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the foundations of neurodiversity-affirming therapy. Participants will gain a deep understanding of neurodiversity principles, their historical context, and their application in mental health practice. The course covers ethical considerations specific to working with neurodivergent individuals and explores strategies for creating supportive therapeutic environments.

Mental health professionals will learn how to shift from a deficit-based to a strengths-based approach, challenging ableism and recognizing the value of diverse neurological experiences. Course Objectives:

  • Attendees will be able to understand and articulate the principles of neurodiversity, including its historical context, core concepts, and common neurodevelopmental conditions, while developing awareness of ethical considerations in neurodiversity-affirming practice.
  • Attendees will be able to demonstrate the ability to shift from a deficit-based to a strengths-based approach in mental health practice, recognizing and challenging ableism while valuing diverse neurological experiences.
  • Attendees will be able to apply neurodiversity-affirming principles to create supportive therapeutic environments, adapt clinical practices, and effectively work with families and support systems of neurodivergent individuals.

About the Presenter:

Emily Kircher-Morris, M.A., M.Ed., LPC (MO #2012026754) specializes in supporting the mental health needs of neurodivergent people. She is the author of several books, including Teaching Twice-Exceptional Learners in Today’s Classroom (Free Spirit Publishing, 2021) and the forthcoming Creating Neurodiversity-Affirming Schools (Free Spirit Publishing, Fall 2024). She is the host of The Neurodiversity Podcast. She frequently presents at national conferences and provides professional development and continuing education for educational and mental health organizations throughout the world.

Continuing Education Information:

Upon completion of the course, an evaluation and check for understanding will be provided. After passing the check for understanding, you will be provided via email a certificates of completion. This process is automated; you may also access your certificate through your Teachable account.

This training provides 1.25 hours of continuing education.

Registration Requirements:

This program is open to any mental health professional, medical professional, or educator who supports the mental wellbeing of neurodivergent people. Continuing education hours are limited to those with graduate degrees in a mental health field.
